An APD amplifies the photocurrent through the avalanche effect and therefore has a significantly higher sensitivity than a conventional SiC photodiode. Applications are in the area of flame and fire detection.<br \/>\nSuccessful completion of the project would create an interesting alternative to the gas discharge tubes currently in use.
